Dr Melanie Joy - Founder & president of CAAN
This talk was recorded at the National Herbarium of Victoria in Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens on 19th August 2013, as part of an Australian & NZ speaking tour produced by Sentient WE, in association with The Jane Goodall Institute Australia.
Dr Melanie Joy is a professor of psychology and sociology at the University of Massachusetts and author of the award-winning book "Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs & Wear Cows" and also "Strategic Action for Animals". She is also the founder and president of the Carnism Awareness and Action Network (CAAN). Dr Joy has given countless presentations across the USA and Europe on the subject of carnism, that is, the dominant, yet invisible paradigm in modern culture supporting the choice to consume meat.
The night was introduced by Natalie Houghton (CEO of JGIA) and Phil Wollen OAM, and two short videos were played in the course of Dr Joy's presentation. However, due to the venue's audio arrangement, the introductions and videos were largely inaudible in this recording and therefore have been edited out.
