The Abbott Government & Animal Welfare - Glenys Oogjes & Dr Bidda Jones
ANIMAL WELFARE & THE ABBOTT GOVERNMENT - Glenys Oogjes (Animals Australia) & Dr Bidda Jones (RSPCA Australia)
Ahead of the 'March in March' rallies to be held across Australia from March 15th to 17th, we take a look at some of the significant and regressive changes the Coalition government has made to animal welfare initiatives.
Dr Bidda Jones, Chief Scientist RSPCA Australia, joins us to discuss the recent announcement from the Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, that Memoranda of Understanding will no longer be required for new overseas live animal export markets.
Glenys Oogjes, Executive Director Animals Australia, will discuss the litany of cuts to animal welfare initiatives. These cuts dramatically affect the ability of animal welfare organisations to provide advice to the government on animal welfare issues.
The cuts include:
* disbanding the Australian Animal Welfare Advisory Committee
* dismantling the Committee's initiative, the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy
* closure of the Department of Agriculture's Animal Welfare Branch
'March In March' is three days of peaceful assemblies, non-partisan citizens’ marches and rallies at Federal Parliament and around Australia to protest against government decisions that are against the common good of our nation.
The marches will signify a 'people’s vote of no confidence' in government policies and decisions.
